Becoming Barbie - Proctectomy surgery

I never imagined that a birth injury 27 years ago would lead me to needing a stoma, and now to the removal of my rectum. This month had a robotic proctectomy surgery also known as a “Barbie butt,” where the rectum and anus are removed and the area is sewn closed, smooth like a doll.

Acceptance has been the hardest and most powerful part of this long journey and each stage has reshaped me. This surgery has challenged me in ways I didn’t expect and this next step is about acceptance, healing, and reclaiming my body in a new way. 💕

The surgery went well and marks a big step towards improving my quality of life. I’m now focused on recovery, rebuilding my fitness and strength and I’m looking forward to returning to teaching by later this year.
