Why I became a MASIC Advocate

The MASIC Foundation is a UK charity that supports women with severe childbirth injuries like OASI (Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury)

I found MASIC whilst attending the Consent to Birth Meeting in London, in October 2019 when I was waiting for stoma surgery. I listened to other women bravely telling their stories of what life is like living with anal incontinence and I felt inspired but also frustrated.

Despite it being two decades since my own birth trauma, it became apparent that women are still sustaining these life-changing severe childbirth injuries, struggling to access the help and support they need, living with the physical and psychological challenges an OASI causes.

I am extremely passionate that women need to be educated fully and transparently about the risks associated with childbirth including perineal injury, incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction and OASI.

As a MASIC Advocate, I share my experience to raise awareness, to educate and support others, in the hope of preventing other women from having to live through what I have endured.

By discussing how severe childbirth injuries have affected us we as MASIC Advocates can raise the profile of this taboo issue, make a difference and improve the quality of lives, access to treatment and give support to others in our situation.
